We all have them. Certain memories or sensory triggers that send us to a different place. Smells, tastes, sounds and visual stimuli that puts our brain in another world. These are opinions that can’t and won’t be changed. They are ironclad. For instance:
- The song “Riders on the Storm” by the Doors reminds me of a more pleasant time in my childhood. It reminds me of my stepfather, who served in the Navy , taking me “on watch” with him to a barracks.
- Newly mown grass has no equal in smell.
- When my daughter laughs uncontrollably, so will I. Guaranteed. Even if I have no clue what it’s about
- Speaking of, Gilbert Gottfriend ALWAYS makes me laugh. He could read the phone book. I’d laugh.
- Anytime I see the Philadelphia Phillies play baseball, I think of Tug McGraw, Mike Schmidt, Greg Luzinski and Steve Carlton. I had all their baseball cards. I started out, at 10 or 11, as a Phillies fan. I ultimately became a Dodgers fan later, but still have a soft spot for the Phillies.
- The sound of almost any vacuum makes runs me nuts.
There are a few others. But, I’m curious, if any sound, smell or visual has some sort of memory that is so indelible, it cannot be shaken for you. What is it and why? Comment here.

Love’s Baby Soft perfume, Rick Springfield songs and a certain cashmere purple sweater will always bring back my 16th year. ;)
Smell: Indian food cooking. Smells foriegn and familiar all at once. (we eat it every day since my indian hubby is the chef of our home during the past year).
Taste: tomato and hellmanns mayonnaise sandwiches on white bread, with a bottle of pepsi- those were business lunches with my grandma when I was about 8 yrs old. and she was a secretary for my uncle’s home business. I’d sit on my grandpas recliner while he was away and watch bugs bunny cartoons til my eyes started stinging. Any kind of Rose, or rose flavored scent or taste will remind me of her too. She was obsessed with roses of all sorts in the home and in the garden.
Sound: most songs from the early eighties bring back Thursday nights at the Roller Skating rink. lol! stuff like “Rosanna” and anything from Huey Lewis and the News. awkward when they played the slow songs!
Sight: I hate the sight of a #2 lead yellow pencil with eraser. They remind me of standardized tests where you had to fill in the bubbles.
