But first, I’ll tell you a story about my friend, Fred.
Fred spent the better part of two decades in the U.S. Air Force keeping aircraft like the A-10 Warthog capabile of killing tanks, including a few in Iraq and other locations across the globe. You may recall that one-time NFL football player and Dallas Cowboy Chad Hennings drove an A-10. So did a few of my friends. In any case, the reason they flew: my friend Fred and a bunch of very capable people like him.
In the latter part of his military career, Fred became a very good recruiter and I happened to be working with him when he decided to retire from the military. Now, aside from the being best Thunderbolt mechanic the Air Force has ever seen, Fred also had the honor of being the 2nd greatest Star Wars nut I’d ever met (with my friend Michael being first). His house stood as a monument to Star Wars collectibles and other goodies.
So, as a retirement gift, I could think of nothing better than to give Fred something Star Wars. My friend, Michael, suggested Steve Sansweet’s book “The Star Wars Vault: Thirty Years of Treasures from the Lucasfilm Archives.” Before I knew it, I had the book in my hand and signed by Steve.
Steve and his people made this happen. Period.
When I handed it to Fred at his retirement ceremony (which had an Honor Guard from the 501st Legion — awesome), the smile across Fred face couldn’t have been broader if he’d been sitting in an A-10 cockpit and killing tanks himself. At Dragon*Con later that year, Steve was gracious enough to take some time to pose for a photo with Fred.
That’s where you come in.
The least I could do today is help Steve get 5,000 ‘likes’ on his facebook page before Star Wars Celebration V begins in Orlando. So, Star Wars fan or not, you can help me with that by visiting that very page, liking it and then posting something on his wall saying that i sent you there. Another 128 folks and we get him over the hump.
Let’s get it done!
